Fed estimate of 1.2M electric vehicles by 2015 exceeds automakers' plans

The Obama administration estimated that automakers will build 1.2 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2015 — and is more optimistic than automakers.

The Energy Department estimated in a report released this week that General Motors Co. will build 505,000 extended range Chevrolet Volts through 2015, including 120,000 in 2012. GM said Monday it plans to build up to 45,000 Volts in 2012 — not 120,000 — though it is working to try to ramp up production.

A blue-ribbon report released last week by Indiana University that was written with current and retired industry officials said the 1 million goal was "undoable."
