The Herring Are Running Their Way Upriver to Assawompset Pond

Each spring families flock to the Namasket River in Massachusetts to watch countless herring fight their way upriver to Assawompset Pond where they breed. The best spot to see the full drama: a fish ladder at a dam. Dams are bad news for species like river herring (also called alewives) that must migrate between inland breeding grounds and the ocean at various points in their lifecycle in order to survive. Fish ladders give the fish a fighting chance.
