Water: Challenges and Solutions

Earth Focus looks at why the availability of fresh water is a growing global challenge and at how some innovative solutions are making a difference. For over two decades the states of Georgia, Florida and Alabama have fought over water in the Chattahoochee River Basin. Filmmakers Rhett Turner and Jonathan Wickham's new film "Chattahoochee: From Water War to Water Vision" explains why.

Bangladesh is one of the world's most densely populated nations on Earth. And the capital Dhaka is one of Asia's fastest growing cities. News and documentary producer Stephen Sapienza reports on an innovative program that has found ways to provide clean water and sewage services to Dhaka's urban slum dwellers.

Over a billion people in the world don't have access to clean water. Dr. Greg Allgood is helping change all that. He is providing millions of people with clean water using water purification packets developed by Proctor and Gamble and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Allgood heads the Children's Safe Drinking Water Program and tells Earth Focus correspondent Miles Benson how this simple solution is saving lives.

Acid mine drainage is one of mining's most serious threats to water. A mine draining acid can devastate rivers and streams, and affect aquatic live for hundreds of years. Filmmaker Mike Shubbuck looks at how acid mine drainage affects waters in Pennsylvania.
