Cornwall Council has given the go-ahead to build the UK’s largest solar farm. The £12m project near Bodmin in Cornwall will cover a 27-acre site and produce 5MW of electricity.
Bodmin-based renewable energy developer Cornwall Power is leading the project in partnership with British solar investor the Foresight Group. About 100 jobs are likely to be created by the construction of the solar farm.
The ground-mounted solar farm will be built on a 27-acre site owned by the Lanhydrock Estate Company. The electricity generated at the site will be used by South West Water at its Restormel Water Treatment Works.
Cornwall Power chairman David Fyffe said: “Normally such a system would sell electricity to the national grid but we have selected the site carefully in order to provide power to the water treatment works that is nearby.
