Cities across the United States are realizing the benefits of energy-efficient buildings as a way to battle both global warming pollution and high electricity bills. The Environmental Protection Agency recently announced its third annual list of U.S. cities with the greatest number of buildings that earned the Energy Star certification, a strict measure of energy efficiency performance standards.
For the third year in a row, Los Angeles topped the list of metropolitan cities with 510 Energy Star-certified buildings in 2010. The other cities in the top 10 list are: Washington, D.C.; San Francisco; Chicago; New York; Atlanta; Houston; Sacramento; Detroit; and Dallas-Fort Worth. Nine out of these top ten cities had more than 150 buildings certified Energy Star in 2010.
Even better news: The number of energy-efficient buildings in this country is rapidly increasing. Dramatic growth in 2010 allowed for more than 6,200 commercial buildings to earn Energy Star certification, a nearly 60% increase compared to 2009. Since the EPA first began awarding Energy Star certification to buildings in 1999, more than 12,600 buildings have earned this honor.
