The Solarball: An innovative water purification system by Jonathan Liow, a graduate of Monash University, Australia

In sustainable energy news, a graduate of an Australian university designs an innovative water purification system. Mr. Jonathan Liow created the Solarball as his final project for his Bachelor of Industrial Design at Monash University, which is based in Melbourne, Victoria. The sphere shaped device absorbs sunlight and causes impure water in it to evaporate. During this process, contaminants are separated out, producing condensation which is collected and stored, available for drinking. One ball can generate more than three quarts of clean drinking water each day if it is set in the sun. The Solarball is easy to use, durable, and suitable for people in tropical climates with limited availability of resources. Mr. Liow was motivated to invent it after visiting Cambodia and seeing the need for simple yet effective systems. The Solarball has been chosen as a finalist in the 2011 Australian Design Awards - James Dyson Award.
