Europe's first BYD e6 shows up in the Netherlands: Project 75-EV-RO

Netherlands Prince Maurits van Oranje drives the BYD e6 BYD and Rotterdam (the second-largest city in the Netherlands) have entered into a binding agreement that calls for the Chinese automaker to deliver an undisclosed number of its electric e6 crossovers as part of the Netherlands green transportation initiative dubbed "75-EV-RO." Under the 75-EV-RO project, the government of Rotterdam is looking to purchase 75 alternative energy vehicles.

Renault launches automotive industry's "biggest solar energy project"

In cooperation with Gestamp Solar, Renault is launching what it hails as the automotive industry's "biggest solar energy project." By installing solar roof panels at six of its French plants, Renault hopes to harness the power of the sun to cut its CO2 emissions by 30,000 tons a year. Renault says that the solar panels - eventually covering an area that's equivalent to 63 football fields - boast a total power output of 60 megawatts (the approximate annual consumption of a town with a population of 15,000).

The solar roof project is part of Renault 2016 - Drive The Change, the automaker's strategic plan to reduce its carbon footprint by 10 percent by 2013 and by an additional 10 percent between 2013 and 2016.

Trashion: Everyday to Obscure by Veronica Coleman

Creations such as a wedding dress fashioned of over 2000 coffee filters (with bling created from an old flash bulb). Skirts made of newspaper, potato sack dresses, a hot little black garbage bag dress with a cassette tape belt and a dress made from Mardi Gras beads (cause there are PLENTY of those to go around). The crowd favorite was a fashionable cocktail dress made from Rolling Stone magazines.

Amazing Paper Dresses by Jum Nakao

Sao Paulo based fashion designer Jum Nakao makes dresses out of paper. It took 700 hours and one ton of paper to create these beautiful dresses. After the runway show, all dresses were destroyed to serve as a reminder that fashion is just “a medium and not an end in itself”.

German Pavilion for 2015 Milan EXPO by Patrick Vogel

The topic of the upcoming EXPO 2015 in Milan is “Feeding the planet – Energy for life.” So how could a pavilion deal with that topic? It’s name is Biolosophy, a design by architecture student Patrick Vogel at Wismar University, Germany. The basic idea was to design a building, that seems “alive” and maybe eatable. Food is getting scarce on the planet, and meanwhile the world population is increasing. One almost infinite resource that we have is algae. The building is created with special columns and beams, made of steel, concrete and acrylic glass with algae growing in it. So the visitor of the pavilion feels like they are moving in a huge cell structure and can watch the algae grow and also eat it.

The design deals with the global food crisis and shall show new possibilities that we should all observe. It should be seen as a food producing algae sculpture with a highly sustainable effect in terms of feeding the planet and dealing with upcoming global issues. We already have the technology for growing algae, decreasing CO2 through algae cultivation and producing healthy algae-food, so why not use it in a modern building?

Times Eureka Pavilion: Cellular structure inspired by plants by NEX and Marcus Barnett

Commissioned by the Times Newspaper in association with Kew Gardens for the 2011 Chelsea Flower Show, the project is undertaken by NEX Architecture in collaboration with Landscape Designer Marcus Barnett. It is a temporary exhibition space with the primary task of demonstrating humanities symbiotic relationship with natural ecosystems and offering an intimate space for visitors.
