This green mosque by architects Onat Oktem, Ziya Imren, Zeynep Oktem and Uri Tzarnotzky recently took first place in the Faith in Place competition, which challenged designers to come up with new ideas for religious buildings. The team suggests using materials with recycled content for the structure and considered the importance of using paints, adhesives, and sealants that feature low chemical emissions for the sake of the environment. The use of local materials for the construction and the interior design minimizes the energy spent on shipping, thus contributing to the project’s sustainability goals.

A German stockbroker's love for his electric car has earned him distinction as one of the highest mileage Tesla owners in Europe.
Hansjorg von Gemmingen drives his electric blue car almost every day and can't imagine going back to a gas-powered vehicle any time soon.

The massive number of miles accumulated by von Gemmingen defies the common perception that electric vehicles aren't reliable, and can only be used close to their home charging station.

"As soon as I started driving my Tesla Roadster, the petrol in my blood turned electric," von Gemmingen said. "When I was driving a conventional car, I did not look for outlets, so I didn't understand how easy it would be to charge an EV. But now I see outlets everywhere, and I don't have problems charging at home or on the road."

Peru to Add 200 MW of Renewable Energy in 2012

Peru is not a renewable energy giant, for sure. But it, like many countries around the world, is taking climate change and peak oil seriously and is looking to do its part.

Peru is planning to implement 6 renewable energy projects, 3 solar energy projects and 3 wind energy projects, in 2012. In total, these projects will have a capacity of 200 MW.

The solar power plants will be built in the north (Piura) and the wind farms in the south (Moquegua, Arequipa, and Tacna).

Floating wind turbines producing at least 20 MW each: this is the vision that is to be explored in an exciting new collaboration between DTU and international partners from both industry and the research community. The 4-year project called DeepWind has a €3m grant under the European FP7 programme for future emerging technologies.

DeepWind was launched October 1st 2010, and Risø DTU is coordinating the consortium of 12 international members.

“Our objective is to develop more cost-effective MW wind turbines through dedicated technology rather than advancing existing concepts that are based on onshore technology being transported to the sea environment. Offshore wind energy today is twice as expensive as onshore technologies. That means that there is plenty of room for improvement,” says DeepWind Project Manager Uwe Schmidt Paulsen, Risø DTU.

Honda to Roll Out New EV Concept at L.A. Auto Show

For a company that rolled out one of the first hybrids in America, Honda has fallen behind in the electric vehicle race. They seem to realize this though, and will debut a new EV concept at the L.A. Auto Show.

Details on what exactly this new EV concept will be are non-existent, though Honda has provided us with the time and location of the unveiling. Wednesday, November 17th at the L.A. Auto Show, around 1:20 pm. If you can’t make it to the show, they will be live-streaming the webcast.

Could it have something to do with Honda’s plan to ditch nickel-metal hydride batteries in favor of lithium-ion packs? Maybe.
