Japan tsunami waves broke ice shelf in Antarctica

The tsunami which ravaged Japan on March 11 caused waves which reached the Sulzberger ice shelf in Antarctica, more than 13,000 kilometres away and caused parts of the shelf to break off forming new icebergs, one the size of the New York suburb Manhattan, says the European Space Agency. Satellites spotted icebergs breaking from the shelf on March 12, and by March 16 they had left Antarctica and were floating into the Ross Sea. The area affected had been stable for around 46 years.
